While Preparing For Our ORI Off Gitmo, Cuba, The Engineer And Master Chief, Were Doing An Inspection Of The Engineering Spaces On USS Rockbridge APA 228 In The Summer Of 1967. Upon Entering The Machine Shop Area Of The Engine Room The “Strawberries” , (Yes.. Strawberries) Hit The Fan!
It Seems That During The Last, “All Hands Not On Watch” Stores Load Out One Of The BT’s Rerouted A Container Of Vanilla Ice Cream And A Case Of Six, One Gallon Cans Of Frozen Strawberries To The Engine Room Where We All Had Strawberry Sundays Untill The Ice Cream Was All Gone.
But…… There Were Two Gallons Of The Semi-Frozen Strawberries Left And Not Wanting To Just Throw Them Away One Of The MM’s Hid Them In The Overhead Of The Machine Shop Were They Were Promply Forgotten!
With The Temperature Well Over 100 Degrees In The Machine Shop The Fermentation Process Rapidly Increased The Pressure In Side The Cans To The Point That Just As The Engineer And Master Chief Entered The Shop They Blew Up, Leaving Them Covered Head To Toe With Very, Very Rotten Strawberries! You Can Imagine The Scene As The Guys Fell Into Fits Of Laughter, Only To Sober Up Very Quick.
The End Result Was Definitely Not Fun For All Involved And The Memories Of The Strawberry Sundays Were Totally Not Worth The Time We Had To Spend On Board While The Rest Of The Crew Had Liberty In Kingston, Jamica After We Passed The ORI!
