If Eligible, Did You Use the GI Bill After Leaving Military Service? If So, Please Describe Where You Attended College, and How This Benefited Your Career Following.

College was a quest for me that started in 1998 and ended in 2011 due to breaks in service, deployments, and family situations. Where do I begin? I had the Montgomery GI Bill from my Marine service, which covered 1994-1998, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill because I served in the Army and National Guard for OEF from 2003-2006 and again from 2009-2012. I went back into the National Guard for 3 years, the last time just to finish my last year of college to complete my bachelor’s degree.

During this time, I attended Northeast Alabama Community College, the University of Alabama, Jacksonville State University, and finally graduated from Troy University with honors. I was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society. This was a big accomplishment for me because I never took school seriously in high school and went to summer school every year. I was the first person in my family to graduate from high school and college. After graduation, I became an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher for 6 years until disabilities forced me to retire a few years ago. I taught Chinese students of all ages, and some of my students were members of the United Nations. It was a very rewarding job; I really enjoyed it because I got to see and understand the Chinese culture, and I made some lasting friendships with my students.
