If Eligible, Did You Use the GI Bill After Leaving Military Service? If So, Please Describe Where You Attended College, and How This Benefited Your Career Following.
I had gotten out of the Marine Corps on August 12th, 2000, after 4 years as an 0481, Landing Support Specialist. I soon went home to Gallup, NM, and got into a car accident the very next day after I returned home. Which now had me stuck in my hometown. I met the Director of the hemodialysis unit in my hometown at Church the Sunday after the Friday I had gotten out of the Marine Corps. He offered me a job in Dialysis, which I knew nothing about at the time. So, I started working as a certified hemodialysis technician(CHT). I had to take classes and pass a test in order to work in Dialysis. After a couple of years of working as a CHT, I realized that I was doing everything the registered nurses were doing except giving medications and doing assessments.

I decided to enroll at the University of New Mexico and didn’t know much about the GI Bill, only that in boot camp, they took $100.00 a month out of my check. I got much, much more than the $100.00 a month I put into it. I was in nursing school from 2005 until I graduated in May of 2009. I graduated from Nursing school in May of 2009 and have worked as a registered nurse since. I have worked in Long Term Care, Home Health, Inpatient Hemo-Dialysis, Outpatient Hemo-Dialysis, a Nephrology clinic where I taught about dialysis options, Hospice, a social detox setting, and Crisis Response during the height of COVID-19. I enjoy my job very much, and I especially enjoy working with veteran patients. I’ve enjoyed working as a nurse and helping people, and thanks to the GI Bill, I was able to attain my goal of becoming a nurse. I enjoy my job to this day.
