What Was Your Most Proud Moment From Your Military Service? What Made This Especially Memorable For You?

During the CAMBODIAN INCURSION of 1970, I was assigned to Charlie Company 1/12, 1st Cavalry Division. The second platoon discovered a “motor pool” full of all kinds of equipment and supplies.

When I got my draft notice, I was working at a Dodge Dealership and spending 3 nights a week at the local drag strips, so I felt “right at home” at this jungle motor pool/garage.

There were large “duece and half ” type trucks, 3/4-ton trucks, Jeeps, Land Rovers and tools, welders, generators, and parts of every description. Even a cache of rice and drums of fuel, spare tires and even a ping pong table!

I had everything I needed to get these trucks “operational” except the keys!

Before too long I had managed to “hot wire” most of the vehicles that looked “usable”. So we loaded up all the “good stuff” into the big trucks and made a “Convoy” to FSB Evans.

12 “Confiscated NVA” trucks, jeeps and Land Rovers were “on the road” with air cover supplied by a “Hunter/Killer Team” from the 1/9th Cavalry. It sure felt good to see that Cobra Gunship orbit around our convoy!

I can only imagine the look on “Charlie’s Face” when they came back to their garage!

BTW, that’s me driving the big truck.
