What Was Your Most Memorable Xmas From Your Military Service? What Made It So Memorable?

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the barracks,
My navy sisters and I were dressed in our down,
Sleeping in our bunks, safe and sound,
The gentle snow blowing and hitting the ground,
Unusual for Orlando town.

Our thoughts were of missing family and friends,
Hoping that boot camp would soon come to an end,
Dreaming of hearing old Saint Nick,
We opened our eyes. It was only the PO of the watch roaming around quickly.
We went back to sleep, dreaming of sugar plums, nutcrackers, and fairies.

At 0600, we arose to the sound of the Company Commander’s cherry prose,
She yelled and screamed,” Red Cross packages for Christmas to those,
good through boot camp”, but no one arose.

She hand-picked her assistant in charge to hand out the goodies,
Bags full of candy canes, chocolates, lip balm, and Bibles to read.
What other fine things do these boot campers need?

We all said, “Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, too.”
We hugged each other and cried. The best time ever was the reply.
Never again would I see the best holiday ever, Christmas 1984.
My sisters in boot camp are in my heart forever more.
